You'll have to replace your car keys when it doesn't turn. This guide will teach you how to replace the ignition key on a Saab 9-3. You will need to replace the key, purchase an updated reprogrammable phone, and purchase a new case for your key-fob.

Contrary to earlier models, modern Saab vehicles use a transponder in the key-fob instead physical metal key to unlock and start the vehicle. The reprogrammable batteries in the key-fob eventually get worn out, and eventually aren't able to hold any charge. This is particularly true if you keep using the same key on the same lock.

The good news is that it is easily replaced by an experienced locksmith. If you've got the right tools and patience, you can do it yourself. The first step is taking the key-fob apart. Insert a flathead into the slot that is in the middle of your case. The plastic is thin, and it is susceptible to being damaged.

After the case has been opened, you can prepare the new key by combining the lower portion of the key that was used previously with the banana and transponder on the new key. This will ensure that the new key is mated to the CIM properly, which can be the difference in replacing the original key for your Saab 9-3.

If you don't have two keys you'll need to take off the dashboard and steering wheel to get to the ignition. Begin by disconnecting the negative battery cable. Once the battery is removed, you can remove all the trim pieces and dashboard pieces that surround the steering wheel. Once the dashboard is removed, insert screws into the hole behind the ignition switch.

The ignition cylinder is equipped with a key lock which could stop the vehicle from starting if it does not contain the key. If the ignition switch on your 900 isn't functioning, check the key to determine whether it's inside the lock or is stuck in the ignition barrel. It's also recommended to rotate your keys on a regular basis and clean them regularly so that one doesn't get bent.

Saab cars are different from other cars because they don't have traditional keys made of metal. Instead, the car detects electric signals from the key fob via the use of a special microchip.

The metal component of a traditional Saab key is easy to copy, and also not much of a barrier against theft of vehicles. The electronic part of the key fob has a chip that can recognize the car when the key is inserted into the ignition switch.

Saab's anti-theft system has relied on this technology for more than 10 years. It's not as secure as an actual lock on the door but it makes the theft of your car much more difficult. This is why every Saab owner should always keep a spare key on hand.

Most new Saabs come with two keys from the factory, but you can add more at the dealer with a handheld computer, called a Tech-2. The cost can be under $400 for the transmitter+transponder (different than the metal key blade/shell that opens the doors and turns the ignition cylinder). The only exception is for NG 9-3 cars, that have modern, more advanced features that require a separate key-fob to work through a different process.

The dealer will replace the CIM or TWICE module in these cars if keys are lost, and they'll charge you top dollar for this. But we can reprogram the EEPROM in your existing computer to accept new keys, and not replace the expensive modules.
